“Hearing tones, I move with them; I experience their motion as my motion.” -Victor Zuckerkandl
The aim of this show is modest: to gather works by seven artists which consider the body. Together, the collection of works on paper speaks to movement and stillness - states of body-hood - and the space they fill. I like to consider that together, a small crowd forms from these figures tacked up against the wall. What happens when a crowd forms? A dance, of course.
People in a crowd may stand as still as possible, waiting with bated breath (gathering to listen to a talk; circling the gate to board a flight; sleeping or lying motionless; waiting to have their photo taken; witnessing public spectacles; watching something take place) probably rocking their weight from side to side or changing how they hold their arms. They also could be charged with motion (jumping over a fence; wandering aimlessly or with purpose; air-conducting along to a song; marching down the hall or running at full speed; swimming butterfly). These people and the places they may be are caught for a split second on the page, in falsified stillness!
The scale and effect of their movements are irrelevant, the point is—people are always dancing.
