Las Pitiusas

La Paloma
Ibiza, Spain

A solo photography exhibition by Emile Durrer-Gasse

Las Pitiusas, from the Greek Pitýa ‘Pine Tree’, is a name that has lasted two and a half millennia, it was given to the pine-covered islands of Ibiza and Formentera by the Carthaginians in the 7th century BC.

Durrer-Gasse’s photography encapsulates a particular feeling, one that is not often touched upon or noticed by the islands many visitors. Through this exhibition we wanted to draw attention to the ancient spirit of these islands, the adventurous, the free, the untamed and the mystical. These photographs seek to express and unearth these qualities, to restore the rural and enchanting perception of Las Pitiusas.

A simmering feeling,
The feeling on your skin as you lay
on your back against a baking rock
between the scents of salt and pine
And all you can hear are the cicadas
and the sizzling salt water
Evaporating nearby
