The Day was Washed in Honey
London, UK
The Day was Washed in Honey shows a new body of paintings from the artist. The exhibition delves into a wellspring of nostalgia, revisiting memories and experiences through a poignant, dream-like lens.
Polglase weaves layers of paint to create intimate moments, both sweet and bittersweet, reminiscent of the golden, warm glow of honey. This is balanced by a spontaneous, thick application of paint, reminiscent of the lesser appealing aspects of liquid gold; overwhelming, all encompassing, sticky. Polglase encourages one to consider these varying shades of nostalgia through this collection.
The work depicts a tapestry of memory, both personal and universal. Polglase revisits past moments through an evolving process of drawing, painting, and readdressing experiences from different perspectives. Polglase includes work inspired by photos collected from old bookshops—discarded, forgotten images of strangers’ pasts that Polglase breathes new life in to. These external memories, reclaimed and reinterpreted, add an intriguing layer to the show, questioning how memories are passed on and reshaped.
